Infield positions:
Pitcher: The pitcher is the person who pitches the ball to the batter. Once the pitcher pitches the ball they should be prepared for the ball to be hit back at them. The pitcher also has the job at backing up the majority of the bases. This means that they stand behind the base so that if it is a bad throw the pitcher can get it so the runner will not advance to the next base.
Catcher: The catcher is the one who receives the pitches when the batter doesn’t hit the ball. The catcher is responsible for home plate. This means that any force plays or tags at home should be made by the catcher.
First Base: The first basement field about six feet away from first base until the ball is hit. Once the ball is hit, if hit away from the first basemen, first base needs to take the base and be ready to receive the throw from the other fielders. If the ball is hit out into the outfield the first basement should not cover the base for safety reasons.
Second Base: Second base fields about halfway down the line, not next to the base. The second basemen is responsible for second base if the ball is hit to the left. If the ball is hit to the right side of the base, the second basemen should be trying to field the ball and the short-stop takes the base. If the ball is hit out into right field, the second basemen will take the cut off for the throw.
Third Base: Third base is responsible for covering third base when a fielder is going to throw them the ball. Also third base is responsible for the balls in which the third basement can field. This can sometimes be a tricky position to play since the third basemen plays so close to the short stop.
Short Stop: Short stop is probably one of the hardest positions to play on the field. Normally the short shop is the person on the team that has the rocket arm. The short stop is responsible for the area that is not covered by the third basemen on the left side of the infield. Short stop is in control of the team when in the field and normally is the one who calls the plays. Short stop also takes the cuts for outfield when the ball is hit to the left side of the field. When the ball is hit to the right side of the outfield short stop covers the base and second is fielding the ball or going out for the cut
Outfield Positions:
Left Field: Does the same as if playing with three outfielders. Left field takes care of most of the left side of the outfield. If necessary, the left fielder will sometimes come toward the infield to cover third base. Left field also covers any fly balls hit to left center.
Left Center: Stands in the center left of the outfield and covers any errors that are made by the infield when possible. Left center also covers any fly balls hit to left field or center right.
Right Center: Stands in the center right of the outfield. Right center needs to cover the throws to second base, in case of a bad throw they will be there to back it up. Right center also covers any fly balls hit to left or right center field.
Right Field: Does the same as if playing with three outfielders. Covers any fly balls that are hit to right center. Right field may come up to cover first base for the throw but this only happens when the right fielder is playing close to first base
